Sharon Nancekivell

Sharon Nancekivell has more than 18 years of experience as a medical editor and plain language consultant. Former director of Editorial Services, The Hospital for Sick Children, she is currently a freelance editor, writer, and plain language consultant. As an author's editor, Sharon has substantively edited and copyedited hundreds of articles and chapters for a wide range of academic journals and textbooks in the medical and health sciences. As a copyeditor, she has edited for Canadian medical journals such as the CMAJ, Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy, and Journal of the Canadian Dental Association. She has also rewritten and edited more than 1000 health and patient information materials, and informed consents and other research-related materials in plain language for print and online publication. Sharon is also an assistant professor in the Division of Biomedical Communications, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. She has 30 years of experience designing and teaching courses in professional writing skills for learners at all levels in diverse settings, including university, college, and business. She has taught more than 100 workshops and seminars in scientific and medical writing, patient education, and plain language to nurses, clinicians, and other health care professionals; clinical and basic science researchers; graduate students; and professional medical editors and writers throughout Canada and the United States.
